Story/ Summarizing

Essential Question:
How can you summarize a nonfiction text?

Assessment Prompts:

Standard:
R6.A.2.5.1: Summarize the major points, processes, and/or events of a nonfictional text as a whole.

Activating Strategy:
1.      Check student homework from the previous day
a.       Page 87
b.      Vocabulary review
c.       Go over with students
d.      Write down score
2.      Read introductory page of story together as a class
a.       Make a prediction about story
b.      Tell your partner your prediction

Teaching Strategy:
1.      Turn to page 88 in student workbook
2.      Ask students to fill out the “K” column of the graphic organizer
a.       If you cannot think of anything, what are your predictions?
b.      What do you know this story is about based on the leveled readers?
c.       Write down at least 3 things you know or predict
3.      Fill out the “W” column
a.       What do you want to know about Jackie?
b.      How will it relate to the Olympics?
c.       Write down at least 3 things you want to know about the story
4.      Demonstrate a picture-walk with the students
a.       Reading headings
b.      Looking at pictures
c.       After picture-walk, write more on KWL under “K” and “W”
5.      Start reading aloud with class
a.       Call on students randomly to read
b.      Make sure students are following along
6.      Students will finish “L” column on his/her own
7.      Students will complete the corresponding comprehension questions for the story on his/her own
8.      IF students do not finish reading the story in one day, students will begin the second day writing three facts from the story, two details, and one character trait from the story thus far

b.      Continue reading
c.       Complete L and comprehension questions

Summarizing Strategy:
1.      Analyze your prediction, were you correct or incorrect?

2.      If you were incorrect, write a sentence summarizing the story.
