Main/Helping Verbs

Main Verbs and Helping Verbs

Essential Question:
Can you identify the main and helping verbs in the given sentences?

Assessment Prompt:
·         What are some other helping verbs?
·         How can you identify the main verb in a sentence?
·         How can you identify the helping verb in a sentence?
·         Can you compare and contrast a main verb and a helping verb?
·         How does these types of verbs compare/contrast to action verbs?

Standards:
I can’t find the standard for this specific lesson

Materials:
·         Lyrics Worksheet
·         Access to YouTube to show Frozen song

Activating Strategy:
1.      Hand-out lyrics from the song “Summer” from Frozen
2.      Read the directions aloud for the students
3.      Ask if anyone has any questions about the directions
4.      Allow 4-5 minutes for students to find the action verbs in the song
a.       Students will highlight those in one highlighter
b.      We will be referring to this again, and you will have another color highlighter for the other parts
5.      Show video of song for students so they can hear it

Teaching Strategy:
1.      Access how much students know about the topic
a.       Do you know what a main verb is?
                                                              i.      Take volunteers
b.      Do you know what a helping verb is?
                                                              i.      Take volunteers
c.       This should help me see how much the students already know about the topic, and if I need to spend more time explaining this idea
2.      Open up text book to page 120
3.      Explain what a verb phrase is to the students
a.       A verb that is made up of more than one word
b.      Sometimes the helping verb can be in one sentence and the main verb in another
c.       Give an example: The door has been open.
4.      In a verb phrase, there are often two types of verbs: helping and main
5.      Explain what a main verb is to the students
a.       Expresses action or being
6.      Explain what a helping verb is to the students
a.       Works with the main verb
b.      Look at chart on page 120 of common helping verbs
                                                              i.      Read aloud with the class
                                                            ii.      Ask Assessment Prompt 1
7.      Do the “Speak Up” box aloud with the class explaining the helping and main verbs
8.      Complete 9-15 aloud with class
9.      Assessment prompt 2 and 3
10.  Hand- out homework assignment

Summarizing Strategy:
1.      Highlight at least one helping and one main verb on the lyrics sheet in a different color or underlining
2.      Collect lyrics worksheet

3.      Ask essential question
